John Purves began his teaching career as a lecturer in English under Professor Emile Legouis at Lyons University in 1902, having graduated M.A. at Edinburgh University in 1900, He was a Carnegie Research Scholar in modern languages in Rome and Siena from 1903 to 1904, then lectured in English under Professor Herbert Grierson at Aberdeen University from 1904 to 1906. Scope and Contents
The notebook has some miscellaneous early 19th century newspaper cuttings posted in (folios i-v) and a notice of the death of Sir Thomas Reid, Baronet, written 1823, probably by William Ferguson (folio 183 verso). An article by A I B Stewart, ascribes the volume to Peter Stewart and gives family details (loosely enclosed at back, folio 190-196).

He was born in Elgol, Isle of Skye, on 27 October 1923, a native speaker of Gaelic, and died in Edinburgh, 18 November 2007. He went to Edinburgh University and Jordanhill College of Education, Glasgow, and became headmaster of Portree High School (1962-1966) and Oban High School (1967-1972), and finally Rector of the Royal High School, Edinburgh (1972 to 1989).
